We decided to day to turn our workroom into a "Kids' Kavern." Yeah, we know cavern is spelled wrong, but it just works better with the K. We are so excited. The Kavern Committee is going to plan how to best use the workroom, but the teacher said we could do whatever we thought was best, as long as she approved it. We are going to put a couch in there, and we already have a foosball table and air hockey. We have lots of books in there, and will be getting bean bag chairs. Of course, we all can't be in the Kavern at once, but it will be cool to just chill in there after school, during recess, and whenever we earn chill time (which isn't very often). It's going to be hard for Ms. Brockway to get us out of here in the afternoon!

Love Thyself Last
Today we read the poem by Ella Wheeler Wilcox titled "Love Thyself Last." Then we wrote a response to the poem in our own words. This poem is great because it teaches us to put others first. By doing so, we become a better person.

Welcome!
This is the first post for the 2009 - 2010 school year. I am excited for the year to begin and to start teaching my wonderful class. Our class poem for the year is a beautiful poem by Ella Wheeler Wilcox titled "Love Thyself Last."
Love thyself last. Look near, behold thy duty
To those who walk beside thee down life’s road;
Make glad their days by little acts of beauty,
And help them bear the burden of earth’s load.
Love thyself last. Look far and find the stranger,
Who staggers ‘neath his sin and his despair;
Go lend a hand, and lead him out of danger,
To heights where he may see the world is fair.
Love thyself last. The vastnesses above thee
Are filled with Spirit Forces, strong and pure.
And fervently, these faithful friends shall love thee:
Keep thou thy watch o’er others, and endure.
Love thyself last; and oh, such joy shall thrill thee,
As never yet to selfish souls was given.
Whate’er thy lot, a perfect peace will fill thee,
And earth shall seem the ante-room of Heaven.

This is going to be a special year, your last year at Sunkist Elementary. You will grow incredibly this year, both academically and as a person. We will work TOGETHER to achieve our goals, dreams, and aspirations, all the while learning to put others first. This year you will make a positive contribution to the world around you, and you will grow as a person as a result.
So get ready, the ride is about to begin!
